How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost?

If you are an owner of an electric vehicle or looking to purchase an EV vehicle in the Houston area, installation usually runs anywhere from $750 to $2500, but every job is custom fit for your home’s needs.

Why the price range? An on-site assessment with a licensed electrician is required to make sure the electrical service you currently have is capable of safely handling the additional load of an EV charger. Material is another reason the price can vary. We use wiring and equipment that is specifically rated for EV charging stations, receptacles, and vehicles. The distance between your electrical panel and where the charger will be installed will determine how much wiring and other material is needed for the installation. Every home and setup is different, which is why we provide a price range rather than giving you a one-size-fits-all price without seeing what your home actually needs. Once the work is completed by a licensed electrician, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your EV charger has been properly installed, is compatible with your existing electrical service, and is safe to use.

What’s Included in the Price?

A standard installation generally covers everything needed to get you up and running, including the dedicated circuit, wiring, conduit, breaker, mounting, testing, and basic setup.

The charger unit itself is not included. Typically, the charging stations are supplied to the homeowners by the dealership, while others ask the electrician to supply a compatible charger. Basic chargers are a good choice if you want reliable overnight charging. If you want to track energy use or set charging schedules from your phone, a smart charger with WiFi may be worth considering.

Keep in mind that a higher-amperage charger will not charge your car any faster if your EV’s battery cannot accept that much power at once.

What Drives the Final Cost?

  • Your Electrical Panel: EV chargers pull a large, continuous stream of power for hours at a time. The electrician will check your panel to make sure it can handle the additional load alongside your air conditioner, electric stove, pool pump, or other equipment. Even if the panel appears to have space, it may already be near its total capacity. If that is the case, you may need a subpanel or panel upgrade to support the charger.
  • The Wiring Path: Distance matters, but so does the route. Running wire through an open space or using surface-mounted conduit in a garage is usually more straightforward. If the electrician has to fish wires through finished drywall, work through a tight crawl space, or dig a trench to a detached garage, the additional labor will increase the price.
  • Indoor vs. Outdoor: Garages are usually easier because the equipment stays sheltered. If you want the charger mounted outdoors on brick, siding, or concrete, the electrician will use weather-rated equipment and properly protected conduit to preserve the integrity of the wiring from moisture and physical damage.

Level 1 vs. Level 2: What’s the Difference?

Level 1 charging plugs into a standard 120 volt wall outlet. It is slow, providing only a few miles of range per hour, but it can work if you have a short commute and plenty of time to leave the vehicle plugged in.

Level 2 charging uses a 240 volt circuit, the circuit used by a clothes dryer, and is the option most homeowners choose. It charges your car much faster overnight, but it requires a dedicated circuit specifically for an EV charger installed by a professional.

Since EV chargers draw continuous electrical power for hours, the wiring, breaker size, grounding, and connections all need to be installed correctly. A licensed electrician can confirm that the electrical system can handle the charger, identify old wiring or other problems before they become headaches, and complete the setup so the equipment is properly installed and protected.
